3 Gumroad Alternatives That Keep More of Each Sale (2026)
· 9 min read
Disclosure: YourSolopreneurKit.com earns commissions from affiliate links at no extra cost to you. Systeme.io is an affiliate partner. Gumroad, Payhip and Lemon Squeezy are not.
How we tested: We tested two tools hands-on in one session on October 10, 2026. On Payhip's free plan we listed a digital product and opened its public page. On Systeme.io's free plan we started a digital download product, reached the checkout settings and read the plan limits inside the account. We did not open Gumroad or Lemon Squeezy accounts for this article. Their fees come from each company's public pricing page, checked the same day.
Gumroad charges no monthly fee. It takes 10% plus $0.50 of every sale you bring in yourself, and 30% of sales that arrive through its Discover marketplace. On a $10 template that is $1.50 gone, 15% of the price. The fee is the reason sellers look for Gumroad alternatives, so this comparison starts with what each platform keeps from the same sale.
The Short Answer
- Keep the most from each sale: Systeme.io. 0% platform fee on a free plan, with a $10,000 sales limit before you need a paid plan.
- The closest free replacement for Gumroad: Payhip. $0 a month, 5% per sale, every feature included.
- You want sales tax handled for you: Lemon Squeezy. 5% plus $0.50 as merchant of record.
- Discover sends you most of your buyers: stay on Gumroad.

What Gumroad Keeps From a Sale
Gumroad's pricing page lists two rates. Direct sales, through your profile or your own links, cost 10% plus $0.50 per transaction. Sales to new customers who find you through Discover cost 30%. The page states there are no monthly charges.
The fixed $0.50 matters more on cheap products. The table shows the platform fee on a single direct sale at four prices.
| Product price | Gumroad (10% + $0.50) | Lemon Squeezy (5% + $0.50) | Payhip Free (5%) | Systeme.io (0%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $5 | $1.00 | $0.75 | $0.25 | $0 |
| $10 | $1.50 | $1.00 | $0.50 | $0 |
| $29 | $3.40 | $1.95 | $1.45 | $0 |
| $99 | $10.40 | $5.45 | $4.95 | $0 |
These are platform fees as each pricing page lists them. Payhip and Systeme.io both say Stripe or PayPal charge their standard processing rate on top. Lemon Squeezy's page notes small additional fees in some cases.
Scale it up. A seller making 100 sales a month of a $29 product pays Gumroad $340 a month, about $4,080 a year. The same sales on Payhip's free plan cost $145 a month. On Systeme.io the platform fee is $0.

1. Systeme.io: No Platform Fee, Plus the Email List Gumroad Lacks
Systeme.io is a sales platform: funnel pages, an email list, courses and a checkout in one account. Its public pricing page states "No transaction fees" and says you accept payments through Stripe or PayPal at no extra cost. For a seller whose main complaint is Gumroad's cut, that is the whole pitch.
What happened when we set up a product
Systeme.io has a link-in-bio store feature. We created one in about a minute, then clicked "Add new product". Five product types appeared: an external link, an email signup form, a digital download, a course and a physical product.
We chose "Sell a digital download". The product form has four tabs: Thumbnail, Digital download, Checkout page and Thank you page. Each comes with placeholder copy you replace. One label on the checkout tab displayed as raw code text where a field name belonged, a small sign the feature is new.
Then we hit the gate. Under "Price plans", Systeme.io showed this notice: "To create payment pages, you need to connect to a payment gateway that is supported on systeme.io." We did not connect a gateway, so we did not publish the product or run a test purchase.
The honest limits
- $10,000 sales revenue limit on the free plan. We read it on the My plan screen. Past it you need a paid plan, which starts at $17 a month.
- 3 products on the free link-in-bio store. The Startup plan lists 15.
- More setup than Gumroad. Four tabs and a gateway connection, against Gumroad's single form.
- No marketplace. Nobody discovers your product inside Systeme.io.
- Tax is yours to manage. We saw no merchant-of-record service. You collect and file sales tax or VAT where you owe it.
What you gain beyond the fee: an email list of 2,000 contacts on the free plan, funnel pages and a course area. Gumroad sellers often pay for a separate email tool. Here it is in the same account.
Choose Systeme.io if: you bring your own buyers and want to keep the full sale price. A seller at $2,900 a month in Gumroad direct sales would save about $4,000 a year in platform fees. Read our Systeme.io review for the full platform.

2. Payhip: The Honest Runner-Up
If you want Gumroad's simplicity with half the fee and no fixed charge per sale, Payhip is the answer. We are not affiliated with Payhip, and on ease of setup it beat our top pick.
We clicked "Add Product", chose Digital Product, uploaded a PDF, typed a title and a price, and clicked "Add Product" again. About 75 seconds later we had a product page with a shareable link.
The pricing page explains the model in one line: all plans have the same features. Free costs 5% per sale, Plus is $29 a month with 2%, Pro is $99 a month with none. Its FAQ says Payhip collects and remits EU and UK VAT for you, which Systeme.io does not.
The friction was the same gate. Our product page showed buyers a yellow notice: "Seller is unable to receive payments since their PayPal or Stripe account has not yet been connected." The setup checklist read 50% complete after the first product.
Choose Payhip if: you sell under $10,000 a year and value a one-form setup and EU VAT handling over a 0% fee. At low volume, 5% of a small number is a small number.
3. Lemon Squeezy: When Tax Is the Problem
Lemon Squeezy is a merchant of record. Its pricing page says it takes on the liability of tax collection and calculation and is registered to file and pay taxes on your behalf. The fee is 5% plus $0.50 per transaction with no monthly charge for ecommerce.
That fee is half of Gumroad's percentage with the same fixed part. Sellers of software, templates and plugins to a global audience pick it to avoid registering for VAT in countries they have never visited.
Choose Lemon Squeezy if: you sell worldwide and want someone else to file the tax returns.
Which Seller Fits Which Platform
Template and preset sellers with many low-priced products feel Gumroad's fixed $0.50 most. A $5 preset pack loses 20% to the platform. Payhip's flat 5% or Systeme.io's 0% changes the margin on every sale.
Writers and educators with one or two higher-priced products gain most from Systeme.io, because the email list and course area replace tools they would pay for elsewhere.
Software and plugin makers selling worldwide should weigh tax work above fees. A merchant of record such as Lemon Squeezy costs 5% plus $0.50 and removes the filing.
Sellers with a long catalog and little time fit Payhip: no product cap, one form per product, no plan decision to make.
When Gumroad Is Still Worth 10%
Stay if Discover finds you buyers. Open your Gumroad analytics and check what share of sales came from Discover. Those cost you 30%, and they are sales you might not have made alone. If that share is large, leaving trades a fee for an empty storefront.
Stay, too, if you sell a handful of products a year. At 20 sales of a $15 product, Gumroad's fee totals $40. No migration is worth an afternoon to save $40.
How to Move Off Gumroad
- Export your customers. Gumroad lets you download your sales and customer data as CSV files.
- Download your product files if you no longer have the originals.
- Create the products on the new platform and connect Stripe or PayPal first, since both Payhip and Systeme.io block payments without it.
- Import your customer emails into your email list, with their consent status intact.
- Handle subscriptions with care. Memberships billed through Gumroad do not move by themselves. Ask members to subscribe again on the new platform.
- Replace your links in your bio, your site and your pinned posts. Old Gumroad links will keep sending buyers to Gumroad until you unpublish the products.
- Leave past customers' download access in place on Gumroad, or email them fresh links.
We have not migrated a live Gumroad store. The steps follow each platform's documented export and import tools.
Bottom Line
Gumroad's 10% plus $0.50 is the highest standard fee in this comparison. Systeme.io charges no platform fee and adds an email list, at the cost of more setup and a $10,000 sales limit on the free plan. Payhip is the simplest swap: we had a product listed in 75 seconds, and its 5% fee is half of Gumroad's with no fixed charge. Sellers who need tax handled worldwide should look at Lemon Squeezy.
